Today, as we celebrate International Men’s Day, The Family Co. recognises the invaluable contributions men make in creating strong, resilient, and connected communities. While much of our work focuses on supporting women and families, this day gives us the opportunity to shine a spotlight on the important roles men play in building a brighter future for all.

The Power of Resilient and Mentally Well Men

Strong, resilient, and mentally well men are a cornerstone of thriving families and communities. When men are supported to prioritise their health and well-being, they become better equipped to navigate life’s challenges, foster meaningful connections, and inspire those around them.

This International Men’s Day, we’re reminding you that mental health matters, and it’s okay to talk about it. Men’s mental health is often overlooked and misunderstood, but it’s important to create spaces where men feel empowered to open up, seek support, and know they’re not alone in their journey.

We asked some male-identifying members of The Family Co. team to share the advice they wish they’d heard growing up—words that could have helped them feel understood and less isolated. Their answers are a powerful reminder that reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness.

"It’s okay to feel overwhelmed. Asking for help is not a failure—it’s how you grow stronger."

"Your worth isn’t measured by how much you can carry alone. Lean on your mates; they want to help."

"Expressing your emotions doesn’t make you weak—it makes you real."

"You don’t have to fix everything. Sometimes, just being there and listening is enough."

By building healthy environments for men and boys to share their emotions comfortably, we can encourage them to embrace their vulnerabilities and seek help when needed—understanding that doing so is an incredible show of strength.

Men’s Roles in Families and Communities

Men hold many vital roles that shape our lives and enrich our communities. Whether as fathers, uncles, granddads, mentors, or friends, their presence and support create lasting impacts.

  • Fathers might provide love, guidance, and stability, modelling strength and kindness for their children.
  • Uncles and grandfathers could offer wisdom, humour, and life lessons, weaving tradition and legacy into family life.
  • Male-Identifying Mentors could inspire the next generation, instilling confidence and helping young people find their path.
  • Friends might offer camaraderie and support, fostering meaningful connections that remind us none of us are alone.

These roles aren’t just responsibilities; they’re opportunities to create positive change. Every kind word, every moment of time given, and every relationship nurtured strengthens the fabric of our families and communities.

A Call to Celebrate the Men in Your Life

Today, let’s take a moment to honour the men who inspire us with their strength, kindness, and resilience. Let’s celebrate their roles as caregivers, leaders, and friends who uplift those around them.

To all the dads, brothers, uncles, granddads, mentors, and friends – thank you for your contributions to our lives and communities. Your positive impact matters.

Together, we can continue building a world where all men are supported to be their best selves, creating stronger families and a brighter future for everyone.
