It Starts With Us: How Communities Can Lead Change in Preventing Domestic and Family Violence Every one of us has a role to play in preventing domestic and family violence. Creating safe, respectful communities doesn't happen through one big campaign or a single moment - it happens through small, consistent actions that build a culture of respect and equality in our homes, schools, workplaces, and neighbourhoods. Small Actions, Big Impact Prevention begins with everyday behaviour. Calling out disrespect, challenging harmful attitudes, and modelling equality in our own relationships all send powerful messages about what our community stands for - and what it won't accept. When people, particularly men, speak up against sexism and model healthy, respectful relationships, it helps shift the attitudes that allow violence to take root. These moments may feel small, but together they create the foundation for deep, lasting cultural change. Community-Led Change in Action At The Family Co., we've seen first-hand how powerful local leadership can be. Through our programs and community partnerships, we work alongside community members, educators, young people, and organisations across Southern Sydney to promote respect and challenge the gendered attitudes that contribute to domestic and family violence. Our Men for Change Breakfast brings men together to lead conversations about healthy masculinity and to speak out when they witness disrespect. It's a space where men are empowered to be part of the solution - and the response from our community has been extraordinary. Our Consent Conversations program equips high school students with the knowledge and confidence to build safe, equal relationships from adolescence onwards. When young people understand consent and respect early, it shapes the way they show up in relationships for life. Our Corporate Domestic and Family Violence Training supports workplaces to recognise what domestic and family violence looks like, understand how to support a colleague who may be experiencing it, and know where to turn for help. Because awareness in the workplace can save lives. And through our Community Partnerships across Southern Sydney, we bring together local businesses, sporting clubs, schools, and community leaders to champion one shared message: everyone deserves to feel safe, respected, and valued. When communities take ownership of prevention, change becomes more sustainable and more deeply rooted. It's about building environments where respect and equality are the norm - not the exception. How You Can Be Part of the Change Whether you're a parent, coach, teacher, business owner, or neighbour, your actions matter more than you might realise.
