Statement of Advocacy from The Family Co. on Recent Domestic Violence Incident in Engadine

At The Family Co., our hearts go out to the victim, their family, and all those impacted by the recent domestic violence incident in Engadine, on Sunday 25th August. We stand in solidarity with them, voicing our strong support and deep concern. This act of violence is a stark reminder of the ongoing crisis faced by many women across Australia. We take this opportunity to reaffirm our mission to fostering a safe and nurturing community for everyone.

We unequivocally condemn all forms of family, intimate partner and domestic violence, particularly the frightening rate at which women continue to be victimised. In the past year alone, domestic violence has claimed the lives of 58 women in Australia, a devastating statistic that highlights the urgent need for action.

Rising Rates of Domestic Violence

The prevalence of domestic violence in Australia is deeply concerning. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, approximately one in six women (17%) has experienced physical or sexual violence by a current or former cohabiting partner since the age of 15. Even more alarming, the rate of emotional abuse is on the rise, with one in four women (23%) reporting having experienced such abuse by a partner. These numbers are a call to action for both the government and the community. Domestic violence is a grave violation of human rights and a barrier to the well-being and safety of all individuals and families. There is an urgent need for comprehensive strategies to address and prevent abuse in all forms.

In light of these rising figures, we at The Family Co. are working actively and tirelessly to combat and highlight this critical issue, calling upon the government and the community at large to take decisive action through the following:

  • Raise Awareness, Support and Advocacy for The Family Co.: Through awareness, exposure and advocacy of our service we can raise more funding. Greater funding in turn allows us to expand our services, further increase our reach and support the community where necessary and required.
  • Increase Funding for School Programs: Implement educational initiatives that teach young people about healthy and balanced relationships and respect from an early age.
  • Enhance Support Services: Provide more resources and support for those impacted by domestic violence, including counselling, legal assistance, and safe housing options.
  • Strengthen Legislation: Enforce tougher laws for perpetrators of domestic violence to ensure accountability and further protection for victims.
  • Expand Housing Assistance: Allocate funds to secure safe and affordable housing for individuals and families escaping abusive environments.

Our Commitment to Helping at The Family Co.

Through our comprehensive services, we provide a safe space for those seeking help and work tirelessly to empower victims to rebuild and recommence their lives. We are also committed to educating the community about the signs of abuse and the importance of respectful, healthy relationships. Everything we do at The Family Co. is underpinned by our mission to support those affected by domestic violence through a range of services, including:

  • Casework and Advocacy: Providing emotional support and practical assistance to victims navigating their journey.
  • Safe Spaces: Creating environments where individuals can seek refuge and find the help they need without fear.
  • Educational Workshops: Offering programs that promote awareness and understanding of respectful relationships and the signs of coercive control.

Supporting Legislative Changes

We wholeheartedly support the recent legislative changes aimed at addressing coercive control and other forms of domestic violence. By advocating for these changes, we aim to stem the tide of abuse in our community. Our efforts include raising awareness, educating the public on the importance of respectful relationships, and providing resources to those seeking help. We play a vital role in fostering knowledge and awareness in the community about what respectful relationships should look like.

The Power of Support: How Funding and Donations Make a Difference

Our work at The Family Co. is only possible because of the generous support from the community. Every donation, no matter the size, goes a long way in helping us provide essential services to those in need. Funding allows us to expand our programs, reach more individuals and families, and offer the safe spaces and resources that are so desperately needed. Whether it’s supporting victims through our crisis services, educating the community on prevention, or advocating for stronger laws to protect the vulnerable, your contributions have a direct and lasting impact.
