How Our In-House GP Program Is Changing Lives

At The Family Co., we know that health and wellbeing are deeply connected to safety, trust, and accessibility. That’s why our in-house GP program in partnership with Kirrawee Family Medical Practice has become a vital part of the holistic care we offer to women and families in the Sutherland Shire.

Recently, one of our caseworkers shared the impact the service had on a woman she supports. The client, a mother of a young child, had previously faced negative experiences with health professionals, leading to deep reluctance around seeing a doctor. But when she learned that a GP was available right here at The Family Co. in a space she already felt comfortable and supported - her whole energy shifted.

“She excitedly asked to be put on the list for an appointment for both herself and her child,” the caseworker shared. “After the appointment, she became emotional - her eyes welled up as she said it was so good to see a doctor here.”

These words speak volumes. For many women who’ve experienced trauma, family violence, or housing instability, even basic healthcare can feel out of reach. Our in-house GP service breaks down those barriers, providing compassionate, trauma-informed care in a familiar and supportive environment.

Another woman, who recently relocated to the area after a year of homelessness, also found hope in this service. With no current GP and a long history of being unsettled, she too expressed excitement to be able to access healthcare in a place where she feels safe and at ease.

Our GP program ensures that women don’t have to navigate complex healthcare systems alone. Instead, they can receive the support they need alongside other vital services such as case management, counselling, and family support—all under one roof.

By meeting women, children and families where they are, emotionally, physically, and practically, we help remove the barriers to better health and brighter futures.
