Love Bites "Highly Commended" in Education Category at 2019 Clubs NSW Community Awards

We are delighted to share the news that our Love Bites program, supported by Sharks Have Heart, has won a Highly Commended award over the weekend within the education category of the Clubs NSW Awards Night!

This award is a fantastic recognition the wonderful partnership between Cronulla Sharks/ Sharks Have Heart and SSFS, and the outstanding impact that the program achieves in providing education and support about healthy relationships, consent, sexual assault and domestic and family violence to young people within our community.

Our thanks to Sharks Have Heart for their ongoing support of this important initiative, and to the professionals from SSFS and EDYS staff, Police, psychologists, DV counsellors, and other youth and family services organisations who volunteer their time to facilitate these sessions in schools.

Developed by NAPCAN (National Association for Prevention of Child abuse and Neglect), the Love Bites program, fitting comfortably within the Sharks Have Heart social impact pillar, has consistently reached over 1,200 Year 10 students each year since it was launched in 2011.

Sharks Have Heart, through their platinum partner Capital Bluestone and the Sharks Leagues Club, has helped to fund a part time coordinator for the acclaimed school-based domestic and family violence, sexual assault and consent awareness education program.

Love Bites works to deconstruct the myths that exist in the local community about domestic violence and sexual assault, with the program refreshed in line with community expectations.

The new program provides important messaging and education that is essential to helping young people grow and have respectful relationships.

The Sharks Leagues Club are proud supporters of the program and believe Love Bites deals with real issues within society that need to be addressed, with the benefit being it is a preventative educational program that is aimed at making a difference to future generations.

Held at the International Convention Centre in Darling Harbour, Sydney and compared by radio and television personality Ben Fordham, with Clubs NSW Chairman George Peponis delivering the welcome address, the night celebrated and recognised the many stories of community contribution from registered Clubs across NSW.

The awards cover nine categories, representing the Clubs NSW core community values, capturing the relationships clubs have with individuals, local groups and with other clubs.

The Family Co. is offering an abridged version of the popular Tuning in to Teens program. This 4-week parent education workshop series helps parents of tweens/teens aged 10-18 years reduce conflict, increase communication, and recognise, understand and respond to their teenager's emotions as well as their own. The group starts on Tuesday 7th May 2024 from 6-8pm and will be held at The Family Co. in Jannali. Please note this program is for SUTHERLAND SHIRE RESIDENTS ONLY
Circle of Security for First Nations Families

The Circle of Security Parenting program is an 7 week parenting course, offered FREE by The Family Co and Lilli Pilli Counselling. The course is held each Thursday from 16th May - 27th June from 10am - 12:00pm at South Sydney PTS. This is specifically for you if you identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander or have children that identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Volunteer

Volunteering is a great way to help us! We're a lean and specialised team, and while we don't allow volunteers in client facing capacities, we are very grateful to have volunteers who can assist with admin, marketing and events. If you're interested, we'd love to hear from you!

Learning about Australian Animals sparks joy in Djanaba kids

Last week the Djanaba Occasional Care team integrated a learning unit on Australian Animals, with the children showing great interest in the varied activities from reading, to art, to games, that helped them learn all about koalas, kangaroos, and other native fauna.

This supportive group provides opportunity for families to connect with their child through fun, interactive activities, sensory play and art.

The Family Co. Youth Services offer information, support and programs for young people, schools and families. Our experienced staff aim to support young people to strengthen and foster relationships and develop resilience and life skills.
